Description

Established in 2003 and inaugurated by His Highness the Aga Khan and the late President Mwai Kibaki, the Academy was the first in what would become a global network of Aga Khan Academies, now spanning Kenya, India, Mozambique, and Bangladesh. Situated on an 18-acre campus in the Kizingo area of Mombasa, its architecture draws inspiration from the Swahili coastal tradition, a school that looks and feels like it belongs exactly where it is. As a fully authorised IB World School, the Academy offers education of the highest standard, built around a multicultural student body and an experienced team of educators, with a clear mission: to prepare students for lives defined by leadership and service. The Academy is also the only IB school in Africa whose students have won the IB's Dr Siva Kumari Middle Years Programme Student Innovators' Grant every single year since its inception in 2019, a record that says everything about the calibre of young people being shaped here.

Unique Features

Set on an 18-acre campus, the Academy's facilities include purpose-built classrooms, science and computer labs, a library, art and music rooms, design and technology workshops, and The Commons — a dedicated dining and activity hub. Sports are a major part of campus life, with students able to represent the school in swimming, cricket, basketball, hockey, netball, football, rounders, and athletics, alongside inter-house events including an annual swimming gala. Sports facilities include swimming and diving pools, soccer and hockey fields, a gym, floodlit fields, and tennis courts. English is the primary language of instruction, with a bilingual programme to develop Kiswahili alongside other languages, and the IB curriculum incorporates unique Aga Khan Curricular Strands covering Ethics, Pluralism, Governance, and Economics for Development. The Academy also offers a residential boarding programme for Middle Years and Diploma Programme students, making it one of the few schools on the Kenyan coast with a full boarding option — drawing students from across East Africa and beyond. Details on school transport and specific meal arrangements are best confirmed directly with the admissions office.
